The working principle of automobile muffler were explained through the fundamental mechanism of action of the various types of mufflers. Mufflers are very important tools that automobile system cannot do without as it reduces and control the sound that causes the environmental noise pollution. The attenuation coefficient were considered and the resonator frequency was not neglected as the resonators attenuate sound in the main duct or pipe of the exhaust. Common sound absorbing mechanism used in mufflers are porous or fibrous materials or perforated tubes. This paper presents the basic detailed study of mufflers and its functional needs and application toward noise reduction.
