Abstract

Speaking expertise is one of the foremost basic skills to be excelled due to the high importance and
demand that contribute to meaningful communication around the globe. Despite the truth, there are
many English as second language learners (ESL) who are still battling to speak better English
language. In order to create the awareness of this situation, this paper has been designed to layout
and point some challenges confronted by the ESL learners in learning speaking skill along with the
possible teaching approaches of English educators in teaching speaking skill in an ESL classroom.
The challenges confronted by the ESL learners include low self-motivation and self-confidence,
anxiety, inhibition and minimal vocabulary knowledge. Subsequently, it is fundamental to find out the
approaches implemented by English educators in overcoming the speaking barriers in ESL learners,
hence, providing them with a handful in preparing to speak the language better. In accordance with
that, the feasible approaches that were proved effective by the English educators include the usage of
social media such as Instagram, flipped classroom, debates, group work or pair work and games as
learning exercises. These approaches would be a guide and support for the other educators around
the globe to adapt and adopt the ideas according to their nature of learners.
