Abstract

The histological and histochemical studies of pituitary gland in relation to the gonads of Botia almorhae have been made for two years (2000-2001). Gonadotropic cells in the PPD undergo marked regression and partial or complete loss of basophilic material, or precocious granulation with gonadal cycle of different phases of the fish, B. almorhae. The basophils form a cheif cellular mass of PPD which approaches to maximum with the onset of spawning while acidophils are chief constituents during the resting period. The basophils of the PPD show the glycoprotein secreating activity during the maturing period. The basophils display a marked degree of qualitative and quantitative variations of their cytoplasm during spawning and regression phases of the reproductive cycle. Types of cells of adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis have been identified in relation to the gonadal activities in the fish. Histochemical changes in terms of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids have shown marked seasonal changes with gonadal cycle in the fish.
