Abstract

Variations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) during different months in Glossogobius giuris from Sadatpur lake near Pravaranagar, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, India, have been Studied during June 1999 to May 2000. Study revealed that in the females, gonads were in the resting Stage of maturity during December and January, maturing stage during February, pre-spawning stage during March to May and spawning stage during June to November. The observations Suggest that the G. giuris has prolonged spawning extend from May to November with a main peak in June, July and November. Changes in the gonadosomatic indices (GSI) during different months indicate that the gonadal cycle of G. giuris can be divided into four phases during one year period as preparatory phase (February), pre-spawning phase (March to May), Spawning phase (June to November) and post-spawning phase (December to January). The GSI also shows similar pattern in four reproductive phases; an increases in breeding period and reaches maximum during pre-spawning phase. The pattern of changes in GSI of males was almost similar to that of females.
