Abstract

Nutcracker syndrome, a rare condition that causes abdominal pain as a result of the left renal vein being compressed as it passes between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery, is most common in individuals between the ages of 20 and 30. Its diagnosis is based essentially on modern imaging methods (CT scan, Doppler ultrasound, phlebography) and its treatment is controversial, Doppler ultrasound has a sensitivity of 78% and a specificity of 100%. Both CT and MRI can show compression of the left renal vein between the aorta and superior mesenteric artery.
